Calcular divisas con Gadget de moneda

Gadget de moneda es un freeware construido en la aplicación que se instala junto con Windows 7 y Windows Vista. Gadgets incluidos en Windows 7

The Best Remaining Desktop Gadgets for Windows 7

Microsoft used to maintain a Desktop Gadget Gallery that showcased quite a few gadgets for users interested in using them. However, in preparation for the upcoming Windows 8 launch, Microsoft decided to (as some put it) "stop pretending to support gadgets" . For the company, supporting them is no longer a good idea. Windows 8 and the Metro interface is supposed to bring to the Windows desktop more and better small applications and Microsoft wants everybody to focus on them and forget about gadgets. But what about existing Windows 7 and Windows Vista users, where do they now find great gadgets to use?

The Remaining Sources of Desktop Gadgets

A first source is a left-overs gallery offered by Microsoft which will never feature any new gadgets.

Second, it is Deviant Art’s gallery of so called Sidebar Gadgets. which uses the terminology from Windows Vista even though all gadgets also work in Windows 7.

Third, is this article featuring some of the best gadgets you can still find on the web.

The Desktop Gadgets Recommended by 7 Tutorials

Here, in no particular order, is a list of seven gadgets that I think you will like:

System Monitor - Windows 7 includes a gadget called CPU Meter . It’s not fancy or flashy, but it gives you useful information about what your system is doing. If you want a gadget that gives you information in a more readable format than the two small dials in CPU Meter, check out System Monitor . It’s also small and simple, but I found it much easier to read. You can find it on Build a Gadget.

WeatherBug - I’ve often heard it said that we don’t really have weather in Southern California, and compared to some other places I have lived, we really don’t. But that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in seeing weather forecasts. I have been using WeatherBug Elite on my iPod Touch for quite a while, and I was delighted to see that they have a WeatherBug Gadget as well. It’s a full-featured app that will tell you just about anything you need to know about the weather in your area. Click here to get it.

Clipboard manager - Do you have text that you type a lot? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could store all those words and phrases in one place and just click to insert them anywhere you want? There’s a gadget for that. Clipboard manager lets you set the amount of space you want to use for stored clipboard items, and lets you recall and insert them instantly. Go to Tom’s Guide to download it.

I sure wish I’d had something like this when I was typing my thesis in college. Ever try to type the word “anthropologist" repeatedly? Of course, when I was in college a computer ate punch cards and filled up a whole room, so this would have been something straight out of science fiction.

HTC Home - While Windows 7 comes with a clock gadget, that clock is pretty basic. If you’d like a better, more configurable clock that also comes with a weather forecast, check out HTC Home . There are several different clock styles, and you can have a clock with or without the weather, and with or without a second time zone. You can get it on HTC Home. The weather gadget isn’t as full featured as WeatherBug . but not everyone wants loads and loads of weather reports.

Notes - I personally could not live without Post-It brand notes. I keep a pad of small squares on my desk and I use them to write notes and reminders nearly every day. Windows 7 has a built-in Sticky notes application, which, while not technically a gadget, has turned out to be something I use constantly. No need to dig around on the physical desk top to find the note pad--just click and write a note on the computer desktop and it’s right there in front of me. However, a lot of people have commented that the Sticky Notes that comes with Windows 7 is not as good as the Notes gadget that came with Windows Vista. I never used Windows Vista, but after looking Notes over, I’d have to agree—the Windows Vista desktop gadget is more versatile. You can find instructions for downloading and installing on IThinkDifferent.

Mail preview - Many of us have multiple email accounts, and those who don’t use a desktop e-mail client like Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail or Eudora have to go check each inbox to see what’s there. The Mail Preview Gadget lets you set up as many email accounts as you like, and will show you a notification if new mail has come in on any of them. It’s designed to look like the Windows Phone interface, which makes it very compact and easily readable even on a small screen. You can read about it and download it on Wp-Corporation.

Xirrus WiFi Inspector - This is a gadget which we recommended in the past. Back then it was called Xirrus WiFi Monitor . I definitely agree with Bogdan that this is one of the best gadgets to add to a laptop. Even on my tiny netbook screen it’s clear and readable and gives me a wealth of useful information. It was previously listed in Microsoft’s gadget gallery, but that no longer exists, so the best place to get it is from the Xirrus web site. It’s now called Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector (but alas, it doesn’t play the Inspector Gadget theme song) and you can find it here. about halfway down the page. Be sure you click on the link that says “Download Gadget v1.2" . There is a separate link for the documentation; be sure you read that. The screenshot is of the full sized gadget; there’s a smaller one that has a graphic “radar" or “sonar" display, which you can see in the screenshot from my netbook at the end of the article.

From Plain to Fancy on my Desktop

When I started writing this article, I had no gadgets on my desktop at all, except for the occasional sticky note. I also have only the absolute minimum number of icons, because I like a nice clean unobstructed desktop. Here’s what it looked like (a photo of the Mt. Wilson Observatory north of Los Angeles from the web cam on top of Mt. Wilson).

I still don’t have a lot of icons, but now on my desktop computer I have the very useful HTC Home showing me my hometown weather, and the time here and in Romania so I can tell whether the Romanian team members are likely to be awake or asleep. The time zones are identified by cities, and since there was no time selection for Bucharest, I had to pick a Russian city in the same time zone and use the gadget’s options to rename it Romania. Very easy to do.

And I’ve got Xirrus WiFi Monitor installed on my netbook. The background of the Xirrus meter can be changed to any of several colors; I chose blue for better visibility. As you can see, I don’t have many icons on this desktop either, and the photo is of Stonehenge in winter.

What’s Your Favorite Desktop Gadget?

Stock Gadget for Windows 7

Are you trading with stocks? Have you bought some Microsoft stocks or are you interested in DOW Jones and Co? Well, the bad news are that Microsoft had to remove the stock gadget from Windows 7 RTM (all editions).

Dow jones, who is the provider of the “Dow Jones Industrial Average” quote feed to the Win 7 in-box stock gadget, wants a EULA agreement to be shown and accepted for any user before they can see the data from their feed in the stock gadget.

Luckily there are many 3rd party gadgets available.

Why you may not want to use gadgets: Stock gagets can be a great ways to keep track of your stock portfolio – however, longterm investors would be advised not to check it every 5 minutes. If you’re a daytrader it’s another approach, but if you are a value investor you should keep in mind that stock prices/quotes simply go up and down. As long as you have enough funds to buy when the market goes down, you’ll be fine (if you have invested in respectable companies that have been around for decades and have a great track record!).

Stock Gadget for Windows 7

I don’t fully understand why they had to remove the stock gadget. There are many sites that display realtime stats of Dow Jones, NASDAQ and other indizes, but I suppose it’s all about “pre-installation” without user confirmation. When someone visits a website and requests a realtime quote he does it on purpose and they have to agree to the EULA of the site. Did you know that you have to accept the TOS of a website or you are not “allowed” to visit a site? Of course no one cares, but I guess it makes all the difference.

Do you know of a stock gadget that can display Dow Jones and NASDAQ stats in the taskbar without taking up Desktop real estate? I would love this feature.

Bill, I will look into it and will post some other good stock gadgets that I find.

I downloaded the stock ticker you suggested on your site, however, I have a problem with it in that when I list my stocks, it decides to add a commodity at the end! I check my list carefully (all 20) and I can’t see any request for oil, yet when I close the list, and the gadget comes up, there it is on my list!

I see that the writer mentions to email him, yet, I cant find an email address to ask him. Do you know one? Or, a solution to the problem? Gracias por adelantado. Roger

Roger, did you try to save you stock list as a file (all 20) and then load it from the file.

I also can’t find any contact address, but click on the little help icon and there are some tips. Also another solution would be to add stock symbols of stocks that don’t exist or simply add 10 more stocks that you want on your watchlist anyway. and then you have filled all 30 spots. Besides, the oil price affects many other industries so why not keep it?

I’ve used this gadget since I installed Windows 7 and all was great for a long time. Now, no matter what I do, or where I put it, ^DJI no longer displays the Dow. ¿Qué está pasando?

Well, I too have lost DJI (^DJI) and found INDU not functional. Not just this tool. Google desktop sidebar also lost its functionality for DJI. All else continued working – Did maybe yahoo change a hook?

Is no one going to address the ^DJI issue? I like this tool but I’m going to have to dump it without this feature.

You can get a real good approximation of the DJI by taking DIA and multiplying by 100.1. In stocks gadged you could enter DOW:=[DIA]*100.1

Hermosa. The entry in the gadget of DOW:=[DIA]*100.1 instead of DJI or INDU works PERFECT. Thank you very much “Jaguar”, you have made my year. I have not been able to get the Dow on my gadget to work consistently for almost a year now. Great suggestion!

That is an inspired suggestion, a big time solution to this problem. Only downside I can see is that it’s not in real time like the indexes. So now my NASDAQ and S&P 500 entries are real time, my “calculated” DJI is delayed 15 minutes. No big deal and a huge improvement.

Try, DJI:=[^DJX]*99.996813 That matches the ^DJI for me.

However, to maintain backward compatibility, the same code can be used for a similar effect. First, define a dock or undock event handler. When the mouse pointer hovers over the gadget or the gadget receives focus, an additional icon is displayed. Click this icon to raise the dock event (Smaller size) or undock event (Larger size). The gadget performs the visual transition, as shown in the following screen shots.

Unfortunately, this folder C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets only contains the 3rd-party gadgets.

I was able to find it here (on another system) C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\Weather. Gadget. so I copied them to the same directory on my machine, hoping it would do the trick.

It didn't, because the gadget doesn't show up in the list.

Can someone suggest a way to install the default weather gadget back?

If a trader can guarantee large numbers of transactions for large amounts, they can demand a smaller difference between the bid and ask price, which is referred to as a better spread. The levels of access that make up the foreign exchange market are determined by the size of the "line" (the amount of money with which they are trading). The top-tier interbank market accounts for 53% of all transactions. From there, smaller banks, followed by large multi-national corporations (which need to hedge risk and pay employees in different countries), large hedge funds, and even some of the retail market makers. According to Galati and Melvin, “Pension funds, insurance companies, mutual funds, and other institutional investors have played an increasingly important role in financial markets in general, and in FX markets in particular, since the early 2000s.” (2004) In addition, he notes, “Hedge funds have grown markedly over the 2001–2004 period in terms of both number and overall size”.[61] Central banks also participate in the foreign exchange market to align currencies to their economic needs.

Commercial companies

An important part of this market comes from the financial activities of companies seeking foreign exchange to pay for goods or services. Commercial companies often trade fairly small amounts compared to those of banks or speculators, and their trades often have little short term impact on market rates. Nevertheless, trade flows are an important factor in the long-term direction of a currency's exchange rate. Some multinational companies can have an unpredictable impact when very large positions are covered due to exposures that are not widely known by other market participants.

Central banks

National central banks play an important role in the foreign exchange markets. They try to control the money supply, inflation, and/or interest rates and often have official or unofficial target rates for their currencies. They can use their often substantial foreign exchange reserves to stabilize the market. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of central bank "stabilizing speculation" is doubtful because central banks do not go bankrupt if they make large losses, like other traders would, and there is no convincing evidence that they do make a profit trading.

Foreign exchange fixing

Foreign exchange fixing is the daily monetary exchange rate fixed by the national bank of each country. The idea is that central banks use the fixing time and exchange rate to evaluate behavior of their currency. Fixing exchange rates reflects the real value of equilibrium in the market. Banks, dealers and traders use fixing rates as a trend indicator.

The mere expectation or rumor of a central bank foreign exchange intervention might be enough to stabilize a currency, but aggressive intervention might be used several times each year in countries with a dirty float currency regime. Central banks do not always achieve their objectives. The combined resources of the market can easily overwhelm any central bank.[62] Several scenarios of this nature were seen in the 1992–93 European Exchange Rate Mechanism collapse, and in more recent times in Southeast Asia.

Hedge funds as speculators

About 70% to 90%[citation needed] of the foreign exchange transactions are speculative. In other words, the person or institution that bought or sold the currency has no plan to actually take delivery of the currency in the end; rather, they were solely speculating on the movement of that particular currency. Hedge funds have gained a reputation for aggressive currency speculation since 1996. They control billions of dollars of equity and may borrow billions more, and thus may overwhelm intervention by central banks to support almost any currency, if the economic fundamentals are in the hedge funds' favor.

Investment management firms

Investment management firms (who typically manage large accounts on behalf of customers such as pension funds and endowments) use the foreign exchange market to facilitate transactions in foreign securities. For example, an investment manager bearing an international equity portfolio needs to purchase and sell several pairs of foreign currencies to pay for foreign securities purchases.

Some investment management firms also have more speculative specialist currency overlay operations, which manage clients' currency exposures with the aim of generating profits as well as limiting risk. While the number of this type of specialist firms is quite small, many have a large value of assets under management), and hence can generate large trades.

Retail foreign exchange traders

Individual Retail speculative traders constitute a growing segment of this market with the advent of retail foreign exchange platforms, both in size and importance. Currently, they participate indirectly through brokers or banks. Retail brokers, while largely controlled and regulated in the USA by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and National Futures Association have in the past been subjected to periodic Foreign exchange fraud.[63][64] To deal with the issue, in 2010 the NFA required its members that deal in the Forex markets to register as such (I. e. Forex CTA instead of a CTA). Those NFA members that would traditionally be subject to minimum net capital requirements, FCMs and IBs, are subject to greater minimum net capital requirements if they deal in Forex. A number of the foreign exchange brokers operate from the UK under Financial Services Authority regulations where foreign exchange trading using margin is part of the wider over-the-counter derivatives trading industry that includes Contract for differences and financial spread betting.

There are two main types of retail FX brokers offering the opportunity for speculative currency trading: brokers and dealers or market makers. Brokers serve as an agent of the customer in the broader FX market, by seeking the best price in the market for a retail order and dealing on behalf of the retail customer. They charge a commission or mark-up in addition to the price obtained in the market. Dealers or market makers, by contrast, typically act as principal in the transaction versus the retail customer, and quote a price they are willing to deal at.

Non-bank foreign exchange companies

Non-bank foreign exchange companies offer currency exchange and international payments to private individuals and companies. These are also known as foreign exchange brokers but are distinct in that they do not offer speculative trading but rather currency exchange with payments (i. e. there is usually a physical delivery of currency to a bank account).

It is estimated that in the UK, 14% of currency transfers/payments[65] are made via Foreign Exchange Companies.[66] These companies' selling point is usually that they will offer better exchange rates or cheaper payments than the customer's bank. These companies differ from Money Transfer/Remittance Companies in that they generally offer higher-value services.

Money transfer/remittance companies and bureaux de change

Money transfer companies/remittance companies perform high-volume low-value transfers generally by economic migrants back to their home country. Foreign exchange futures contracts were introduced in 1972 at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and are actively traded relative to most other futures contracts.

Most developed countries permit the trading of derivative products (like futures and options on futures) on their exchanges. All these developed countries already have fully convertible capital accounts. Some governments of emerging economies do not allow foreign exchange derivative products on their exchanges because they have capital controls. The use of derivatives is growing in many emerging economies.[58] Countries such as Korea, South Africa, and India have established currency futures exchanges, despite having some capital controls.

Foreign exchange trading increased by 20% between April 2007 and April 2010 and has more than doubled since 2004.[60] The increase in turnover is due to a number of factors: the growing importance of foreign exchange as an asset class, the increased trading activity of high-frequency traders, and the emergence of retail investors as an important market segment. The growth of electronic execution and the diverse selection of execution venues has lowered transaction costs, increased market liquidity, and attracted greater participation from many customer types. In particular, electronic trading via online portals has made it easier for retail traders to trade in the foreign exchange market. By 2010, retail trading is estimated to account for up to 10% of spot turnover, or $150 billion per day (see retail foreign exchange platform).

Foreign exchange is an over-the-counter market where brokers/dealers negotiate directly with one another, so there is no central exchange or clearing house. The biggest geographic trading center is the United Kingdom, primarily London, which according to TheCityUK estimates has increased its share of global turnover in traditional transactions from 34.6% in April 2007 to 36.7% in April 2010. Due to London's dominance in the market, a particular currency's quoted price is usually the London market price. For instance, when the International Monetary Fund calculates the value of its special drawing rights every day, they use the London market prices at noon that day.

Iirc, they were killed due to a huge security hole they exposed by means of some nasty code with those widgets. This is funny that this is posted though, I had a user ask me 2 weeks ago where they went as they couldn't find the widget pack.

I liked the gadgets, never saw that big of a performance hit even on old hardware.

They do present HUGE security risks and were killed off years ago.

Seems like mobile device apps have replaced gadgets for mos purposes anyway.

I have a CPU Monitor Gadget I found a while back. it is very similar to the System Montor II that BMG linked to. a very nifty app. I know I have proper cooling for my setup but it is nice to have a visual reassurance. and it is sweet to see how your computer is doing in an intensive operation.

Here's a fix, taken from another forum:

We had lost the Weather gadget, and this is how we got it back. Here's the fix we did, and it worked.

There is a config. xml file sitting there.

Open it up. Make one insignificant change, eg delete a letter somewhere. Save the file. Undo the change i. e. type the letter back in, then save the file again. Voila! Reactivate your gadget by clicking on the spanner which appears when you hover over the gadget icon itself, and simply click OK. The gadget should now reactivate and start working.

Microsoft said that they discontinued those gadgets, meaning they have not gotten any kind of security patching since they have been discontinued, making it a bigger security hole than they were to begin with.

Granted these settings are defaulted to the same key on HKLM & none of the site mapping (adding sites to trusted zone for example) are affected, but this could still cause problems for a user adjusted for a specific purpose.

The general consensus, including this same discussion on a Microsoft forum, is that you just have to make a minor adjustment, to the config. xml file, and then reverse it, and the weather gadget comes back to life.

The 7 Best Windows 7 Gadgets

No one really liked the Windows Sidebar when it arrived with Windows Vista. Most enthusiasts saw it as nothing more than cheap rip-off of Mac’s Dashboard with less overall functionality. In response, Microsoft polished up the concept and introduced a proper gadgets platform in Windows 7.

Unlike the sidebar. gadgets in Windows 7 are actually very useful. Unfortunately many people overlook this feature, instead going or a platform like Google Desktop. Having used both Google Desktop and Windows 7 Gadgets, I have to say that gadgets have some advantages. They feel much smoother than Google Desktop’s alternative. The selection is more limited, however, so let’s take a look at some great Windows 7 gadgets.

Three Useful Meters

System monitors are nice to have on your desktop. They offer you the ability to keep an eye on your computer’s resources in real time, which lets you keep an eye out for any strange spikes in the usage of your computer’s resources. These spikes are usually no problem, but on occasion they can alert you to the existence of malware or simply a program that you installed and then later forgot about.

There are three great, related system monitor gadgets available for Windows 7. These gadgets are called CPU Meter, Network Meter, and Drive Meter. CPU meter monitors processor usage by displaying a graphic of processor usage and also status bars for each processor core. This gadget also monitors RAM usage. The network monitor displays IP addresses and keeps track of both uploads and downloads. The drives monitor displays all connected hard drive and their capacity.

Of course, there are many system monitor gadgets you can choose from. What makes these things stand out from the crowd, however, is their interface. Each has a very clear, easy to understand aesthetic that conveys maximum information in minimal space. This aesthetic is the same across all three gadgets, as well (the gadgets are made by the same developer) so your desktop doesn’t look like a hodge-podge of unrelated gadgets.

Facebook and Twitter Explorer

Facebook and Twitter Explorer are, like the monitors above, two related gadgets created by the same developer. In this case, however, the gadgets deal with the most popular social networking websites.

The purpose of these two gadgets is the same. Both Facebook and Twitter are frequently updated by users, and you may also add messages to both. Facebook and Twitter explorer act as simple desktop interfaces for this functionality. This means that you don’t have to have a browser window open in order to keep up to date on Facebook and Twitter updates.

The Twitter Explorer is functional enough that you may no longer have much need to visit the Twitter website. The Facebook Explorer gadget is also functional enough when it comes to status updates, but it doesn’t let you browse or add friends, play Facebook games, or access any of Facebook’s other pages.

SkypeGadget

If you use Skype a great deal you may, like me, become a little bit frustrated with the program’s interface. I personally find Skype’s interface to be far larger than it really needs to be, and while the new ability to access Skype status through a Jumplist in Windows 7 is nice, it doesn’t address the fundamentally bloated interface.

Because of these complaints, I found SkypeGadget to be very useful. SkypeGadget serves as a more compact front end to Skype, making it possible to use Skype without having to deal with the normal Skype interface. SkypeGadget lets you view your contacts, make calls, and begin IM conversations with them. I love having the ability to view my contacts without a huge Skype window on my desktop.

My only complaint with the gadget is the inability to place Skype phone calls to “real” phone numbers due to the lack of a numberpad. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future release.

Doppler RadLoop

Weather gadgets are a bit played out, but that is mostly because they all tend to do the same thing, displaying estimated current weather conditions and perhaps a forecast of some kind. That’s alright, but the problem is that the information isn’t always useful. Let’s say, for example, that you want to ride your bike down to a coffee shop. A weather gadget that simply says the forecast is for scattered shows doesn’t help you much because it can’t tell you if a shower is really near your area or not.

For that, you need to take a look at a weather radar, and that is why Doppler RadLoop is so useful. Doppler RadLoop provides real-time radar information for your current location. This lets you actually take a look at the current weather conditions and make a better decision. If a big blob of red is showing up in your area, you best stay home.

There are a few weather gadgets for Windows 7, but Doppler Radloop works the smoothest. IF you need to keep a track on current weather this is the best way to do it.

Get Your Gadget On

I think some people shy away from Windows 7 gadgets because of the poor taste left in their mouth by Vista Sidebar. Give them a second chance! These are some very useful Windows 7 gadgets, and the often times work better than gadgets available on other platforms.

Solve Your Windows 7 and Vista Gadget Problems Damages and Error Issues (Part 2)

You may already know I have posted an article on gadgets problem (not working issue) and showed how to: solve settings. ini for gadgets, restore gadgets and registry fixing. But that article actually did not solve all the problems of gadgets because it was on not working issue for gadgets. There is another issue for gadgets problem which is called the damaged gadgets. Damaged gadgets problem will show your gadgets but doesn’t work properly. Such as: clock gadget with black background and have only a minute hand, calendar gadget won’t show you anything etc. So what we should do for solving it? Just repair? Just reinstall gadgets again? NO we have to be more aware to installing third party gadgets and should not blame on Microsoft as those gadgets are not given by them but from a trusted party.

Solve Your Damaged Gadgets :

Before starting to solve damaged gadgets,

1. End all running gadgets on your desktop. To do so

Click on start >search gadgets >select view list of running gadgets > remove running gadgets one by one

A new window could come asking Exiting confirmation message and select Yes

select sidebar. exe & end process

Resetting the Sidebar :

Paste the following words in Run bar:

Where you should see Settings. ini and a folder named gadgets .

Rename both folder and file or create a backup those files elsewhere ( My recommendation is to rename those such as: gadgets_old and settings_old. ini ). do not close the this explorer.

Now re-launch Sidebar. exe from Start Task Manager > Process tab > file > new task (run…) >type sidebar. exe >hit ok

You’ll notice that sidebar. exe is running again in task manager .

You’ll also notice that new Settings. ini and folder gadgets are created immediately.

If your problem is not fixed with Resetting the Sidebar then read the next part.

Registry Editing :

Please, before acting on this part backup your registry and do that whenever you are changing and editing Registry.

See carefully, is there any sub-key between Zones and sub-key 0. If so, delete it.

Restart your computer and verify how your Gadgets are being displayed successfully.

Stop the sidebar. exe process (as I explain in the very beginning of this article to stop sidebar. exe).

Delete this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet SettingsZones.

Restart sidebar process

If your problem is not fixed with Registry changing and editing then read the next part.

Re-lunch msxml3.dll, scrrun. dll and jscript. dll by Dll Register Server :

Often by virus, system errors or using unsigned (not certified) program the Register of Dll forgets about some dll files. So in this part I will describe how can we remind the Dll-register that it has forgotten about some dll files which are needed for Gadgets.

1. Open an Admin Command Prompt window. Follow any of this one process.

In my previous article, I have shown ow to work with Desktop Gadgets. Now it is time to continue this subject and share a list with the top 7 desktop gadgets you should install on your Windows 7 computer. They cover different functionality and I'm certain many of them will prove to be useful. In this article I will present each gadget in detail and also share some good locations for downloading gadgets and how to install them once downloaded to your computer.

Where to Find New Desktop Gadgets

The best spot where you can find new desktop gadgets for your computer is Microsoft's Windows Live Gallery. To access it, you can either open your browser and navigate to this link or, open the Desktop Gadget Gallery and click on the 'Get more gadgets online' link, found on the lower side of the window.

The link from Desktop Gadget Gallery will take you to your country's specific gallery, and this will include a limited set of gadgets. However, the Windows Live Gallery shows all available gadgets, for all countries and languages.

How to Install New Desktop Gadgets

To download and install a gadget which interests you, click the Download button under it.

You will be asked to confirm if you want to install it or not. Click on Install .

After this you'll choose whether you want to open the gadget or save it. Choose to open it and click on OK .

Then confirm the installation once again, click on Install .

When done, the gadget should start automatically after the installation.

This process was shown using Firefox as the internet browser. On other browsers, the windows will be slightly different. However, the process remains the same: you need to confirm to the Windows Live Gallery that you want to install the gadget, then open it in your browser and confirm once again the install on your computer.

Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor - this is one of the best gadgets around if you're using a laptop. It allows you to manage wireless networks around you. You can use it to see what networks are available, as well as how strong their signal is. The gadget uses a sonar-like graph to show this. Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor can even be used to disable your wireless network adapter. Clicking the 'Show Details' button will get you into a window that's filled with lots of interesting stats. Also, the look of the gadget can be customized.

Twadget - is aimed at a category of Internet users that keeps on growing these days - Twitter users. It allows you to post to your Twitter account and receive updates in a very easy to use interface, straight to your desktop. You just type in the e-mail/account name you used to sign up on Twitter and you're all set and ready to tweet.

Atom / RSS News Reader - this gadget keeps you up-to-date with all of your favorite feeds. Adding a feed to monitor is very simple: click the wrench settings icon of the gadget, insert the feed name its address, as you can see below. You can also import your feeds from Internet Explorer.

It's also possible to modify the gadget's appearance in order for it to match your Windows 7 theme, as well as how often you want the gadget to refresh your feeds. Switching between your feeds is done by clicking the arrows on the upper side of the gadget.

Weather Center automatically updates data from six weather sources and lets you decide on what data/ parameters to show: humidity, pressure, precipitation, etc.

Another nice thing is that the gadget updates its look according to the weather and time of day at the set location. You also have a couple of arrows (as seen below) that allow you to add or remove a day from the forecast. It can show the forecast for up to nine days at a time.

Activity Tracker - is a gadget that provides a very simple, but sometimes extremely necessary solution: tracks the time you spend performing a certain activity. It acts as a punch card-like system, in the form of a desktop gadget. You just create a new activity, name it and then, whenever you work on it, you click IN . When you're finished, click OUT . The gadget will keep track of the time spent and you can even generate activity graphs (you can also export them as Microsoft Excel files). Another interesting thing is that the gadget can alarm you when a certain amount of time has passed.

System Control - this is a great gadget to perform a lot of important system commands from the same panel. It has buttons for a lot of things: from shutting down, restarting and putting your computer into sleep mode, to switching users and accessing the Control Panel. System Control is very customizable and you can set it to confirm all the commands, so you don't hit them by mistake. You can also customize the theme of the gadget, as well as the color and size of the buttons, so it matches your desktop theme. It's an excellent gadget if you want to have lots of system controls on your desktop.
